In the wake of his 2006 album Love Is My Religion, which earned his fourth Grammy Award, Ziggy Marley shares his musical love with families - his own and the extended human family. Marley's third solo release, Family Time, is produced with old friend Don Was and will be released this May on Marley's independent Tuff Gong Worldwide label. An easygoing journey of original tunes and a few covers, the album offers a full collection of family-oriented songs for those already familiar with Marley's beloved work in the genre, and may serve to introduce today's youngest generation to reggae. Highly listenable many times around, a quality that parents will appreciate, Family Time resonates with themes of love, responsibility, unity, freedom and fun (not to mention generosity - proceeds from the sale of Family Time will benefit Chepstowe Basic School in Port Antonio, Jamaica). "I know how important music can be in a child's growth and development, and in a parent's connection with their children," explains Marley, whose own brood recently grew to five. "This record represents my daily family life and is inspired by my three-year-old daughter Judah and baby Gideon. It was a joy to make and opened up new avenues in my creativity." For the album's recording sessions, Marley invited like-minded collaborators ("friends" rather than "guests") to join him in crafting its familial sound. Kids will love the gentle grooves; grownups are sure to be impressed by the musicians making them. Collaborators include current Who bassist Pino Palladino, Grammy-winning keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Common, Al Green), percussionist Rock Deadrick (Ben Harper, Tracy Chapman), longtime touring guitarist Takeshi Akimoto, and legendary reggae drummer Santa Davis. It was a serendipitous phone call about Davis that brought Paul Simon to the project, lending his instantly recognizable voice to the sweet advice of "Even If You Fall, Get Up." The Woody Guthrie standard "This Train" offers a warm-hearted duet with Willie Nelson, who brought along his ace harmonica player/sidekick Mickey Raphael to accompany him. The notion of kids as superheroes defending the Earth echoes through "Future Man, Future Lady," with Marley joined by Noggin network star Laurie Berkner. Another children's performer, Elizabeth Mitchell, gives an angelic lift to "Wings of an Eagle," based on the classic "Wings of a Dove," while Hawaiian singers Jack Johnson and Paula Fuga help sympathize with the young ones on "Cry Cry Cry," a child's call for freedom. Ziggy Marley plays covert travel agent on "Take Me to Jamaica," imagining a journey through his homeland along with Jamaican '60s icon Toots Hibbert. Actress/author Jamie Lee Curtis also contributes to the album, narrating two short stories, one of her own and one penned by Ziggy ("Helping Hands"). Of course, Family Time derives much of its authenticity from the voices of children, including Marley's. On the title track, three-year-old Judah helps her father implore listeners, young and old, to "lift up your hearts with a smile...it's time to be free." And on the tuba-bouncing tune "I Love You, Too," the importance of that simple phrase finds meaning in the family circle of Ziggy, mother Rita and sister Cedella. The album also includes the traditional Caribbean song "Hold 'Em Joe" (the first song that Ziggy sang in front of people as a child), "Ziggy Says" (a version of "Simon Says" which kicks into double-beat midway) and "ABCs" (with gentle leg-slapping and funny mouth sounds accompanying "A is for Africa, B is for Brother..."). Generations of listeners have long embraced Ziggy Marley's work for children, beginning with Marley and the Melody Makers' rendition of "Give A Little Love," the percolating, sing-along track on the 1991 Disney compilation For Our Children, an all-star benefit disc that arguably launched a revival of high-quality, kids-oriented music. Marley has also contributed to several acclaimed children's programs: the theme-song voice for the popular PBS series "Arthur" and a tune for the Dora The Explorer's World Adventure CD. Most memorable may be his voice in the role of Bernie, the Rasta jellyfish, in the animated Shark Tale, where he also sang his father Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds" with his brother Stephen and dance hall star Sean Paul. He is an active supporter of Little Kids Rock, which brings musical instruments and music lessons to children in public schools, and he founded U.R.G.E. Marley's career began as a family affair 30 years ago. At his father's urging, Ziggy, brother Stephen and sisters Cedella and Sharon formed a vocal group, the Melody Makers. The group was embraced by fellow Jamaicans and, over the next two decades, built an international following. They earned a Best Reggae Recording Grammy for their 1988 major-label debut, Conscious Party, produced by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth and featuring the single, "Tomorrow People." The group garnered two more Grammys, for One Bright Day (1989) and the other for Fallen Is Babylon (1997). Ziggy's first solo performance came in Summer 2002 on the Jeep World Outside Festival, where he toured with Sheryl Crow and other artists. The original sounding roots band from Raglan, New Zealand with music that is message orientated, bass driven, soul induced ... the quiet stalwarts of Kiwi reggae for the past nine years. They continue the path of many artists before touring the venue and festival circuit in between working on their craft. .... Formed in 2001 after a session at the infamous local Raglan Musicians Club, the original three-piece outfit singer/songwriter/guitarist Brian and drummer Turongo Dixon (both Maori) and bassist Naomi Tuao (Samoan/Scottish) formed the rhythm section of Cornerstone Roots. The music at that time was raw and riddim focused with a mix of contemporary styled ska/roots/soul and reggae. ..The band quickly developed a strong local following with many of the early shows being filmed and recorded by fans. This prompted the band to record their first EP One Fine Day in 2001 where they set about touring provincial NZ where the cafes were crammed and live shows intense. .... By the following year the Corners had released debut album Soul Revolution, described by some reviewers as brilliant and impressive. The album was recorded in Wellington with engineer Lee Prebble at Surgery where the rhythm tracks were recorded live in one weekend. The album release was backed up with 20 date tour of NZ ending at the Wellington Town Hall supporting powerhouse rhythm section Sly n Robbie. .... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ....2004 saw the band cross the Tasman eight times with the release of the Forward Movement EP which was nominated for best roots release in 2005. Veteran Studio One DJ Ranking Joe features over cuts off the EP. ....Cornerstone Roots have supported some heavyweight reggae acts including Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, Sly n Robbie with Michael Rose, Jimmy Cliff, Lee Scratch Perry and Mad Professor and The Wailers. They have also recorded tracks with Ranking Joe & Big Youth.... In 2007 the band released their long awaited 2nd album that featured a selection of old and new tracks. "Free Yourself" managed to find its way ino the Top 10 Independent releases and was in the top 20 Indie Album sales for 2007. The album is quietly working its way into the hearts and minds of people all over the world. The band have evolved many times since its humble beginnings but the unique sound has always been maintained with lyrical content for the masses.
Sizzla Kalonji
When the name Sizzla Kalonji is mentioned in Reggae circles, it provokes an extreme response in all those present. Indeed, all who are not present but are familiar with Sizzla's prolific work nonetheless would be equally subject to that said extreme response if they should be present. That is the mark of a truly innovative individual whose name will undoubtedly stand the test of time due to the fact that the responses evoked by Sizzla's name and his music are of no consequence. The sole fact that the responses are extreme is the only issue at hand because that in itself signifies Sizzla's power to affect the reggae loving masses positively or negatively in a very potent way. Even those who are turned off by his message will have to admit that Sizzla is truly a gifted artist at the very least. On the other hand, those who are positively inspired by his music will claim that he is the "King of Reggae."
Controversy
Kalonji was again the subject of controversy recently due to his refusal to bow to the demands of gay rights organizations worldwide, that he issue a formal apology for his anti-gay lyrics, as well as a pledge to cease from producing further anti-gay lyrics. This refusal has cost Kalonji literally millions of dollars in earnings due to hundreds of show cancellations in Europe and the U.S. Kalonji was also officially banned from England late last year. This was unbeknownst to him as when he arrived in England for a tour, he was refused entry at the airport by British Customs officials acting on orders from higher governmental powers.Again this is another case of Kalonji holding firm to his principles especially in light of the fact that every other big name artiste who was subject to gay orchestrated economic retaliation issued formal apologies and signed agreements that stipulated that they would not sing any more anti-gay songs.
Sizzla has distinguished himself as a man of principle. As he says, "Mi nuh work fi career, vanity or money. The people mi work for." Kalonji's actions are a testament to his words. He lives by his words, even though he may be persecuted as a result. Conviction among artists in reggae is a quality that has been sorely missed, and it has become a throwback to the so-called "golden age" of reggae that occurred in the mid to late 70's.
JAH JUAN DRAGONTREE
Born in Michigan and raised in South California, Juan was introduced to music by his parent from birth. His mother traveled Japan as a vocalist, and his father played saxophone on the road for around13 years. At 15 Juan was out on his own and by 18 was beginning to find himself and realized that music and the overall process of creating art is his passion. With rap as his initial musical style, he always did stand firm on his choice to produce and play music carrying a conscious, positive message. As he grew as an artist he discovered Reggae as a way to spread the uplifting vibes.... Now in LA, he is finishing two albums to release in 2011. One of which is called "Earth Minded".
